As we gather for assembly, it’s a good time to take stock of all that’s occurring throughout and beyond our synod. We’re building this page as we receive and process reports, so check back often.
You can also view some reports in this collection of blog posts.
Clicking a name or organization will take you to the report in our blog post (if available).

REPORTS ON OUR BLOG
Shown by most recent post…
As I enjoy my first May here in the Grand Canyon Synod, I am reminded of the prophetic voice of first Isaiah as they envision new life in the desert.
We include quite a bit in our news system, which consists of our site’s blog and calendar, as well as posts to Facebook and our weekly newsletter. Since we revamped our system, we’ve posted over 5,000 times in our blog, with 300 newsletters.
Looking ahead, our commitment is to continue sharing, connecting, and uplifting. We hope to enrich our news system and keep the lifeblood of our synod flowing.
For our 2023 synod assembly, New Spirit Lutheran Church in Tucson shares their story of feeding 325 children for 38 weeks of the most recent school year.
Our regional gift planners Lisa Higginbotham and Josh Kerney share the 2023 annual report for the ELCA Foundation as a PDF, a video, and in this blog post.
The vision of the ELCA Foundation is to be a thriving ministry that develops a culture of intentional generosity and financial stewardship to expand the work of the ELCA. Our mission is to support and sustain ELCA ministries by enhancing gifting capacity and stewarding resources.
What a year this has been! The Holy Spirit has been active and new things are happening in the Grand Canyon Synod. This year was full of new ministries and initiatives, as well as a new role for me.
For our 2023 synod assembly, New Spirit Lutheran Church in Tucson shares their story of feeding 325 children for 38 weeks of the most recent school year.
As we continue to strive to have our leadership reflect the diversity of the Southwest, it is my pleasure to continue and work with you towards a brighter ELCA.
For our 2023 synod assembly, Arizona Faith Network shares their video story of working with ministries on providing heat respite and more.
During the past year the Synod Council has continued to focus on the primary goals of the synod’s strategic plan – to communicate Jesus, connect people, create possibilities.
To all of you — lay leaders, rostered ministers, prayer partners — thank you for your commitment to the synod's work, which forms part of God's redeeming activity in our world. It continues to be my privilege to serve alongside you as the bishop of this synod. As we move forward, let us remain bold in our faith, trusting in God's guidance and love.
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service shares their annual report in this PDF. A crucial example of LIRS's expansion is the work taking place within the Grand Canyon Synod, where, through a partnership with Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, asylum seekers and humanitarian parolees are receiving protection-centered and trauma-informed case management services through LIRS’s Welcome Center initiative.
Pastor Verónica Alvarez shares story of Faith/La Fe Lutheran Church in Phoenix for their annual report in this video.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler shares their Walking Wet Discipleship Journey Event in their annual report.
The Global Engagement Team shares their 2023 annual report via video.
Thanks to support from the Grand Canyon Synod and many others, the Inside Out Network (ION) continues to provide our one-of-a-kind online platform that connects people leaving incarceration with the service providers and ministries ready to provide the help and support they need.
If you haven’t heard about us before: ION is like eHarmony for reentry. Returning citizens and service providers can find each other and message back and forth, even prior to the inmate’s release.
Kimberle Kennedy shares the 2023 annual report for Diakonia. View in this blog post, in this PDF or this Word doc.
Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) shares their 2023 annual report as a PDF and in this blog post.
As we prepare for our 2023 Grand Canyon Synod Assembly, we again ask your help in sharing your story.
Mission and ministry partners to the Grand Canyon Synod are asked to provide your ministry’s story in a way that works best for you. You can provide us with a written story, photos, audio, video, or a combination of these media. Our only requirement is that the story can be consumed in less than five minutes, with 2-3 minutes being ideal.
Our synod is blessed with many mission and ministry partners. Last year we shared 45 reports, which are far too many to present at an assembly with a full agenda.
Therefore, we’ll again feature our stories as stand-alone news items in the lead-up to our 2023 assembly. Each story will appear in our blog, Facebook page, and weekly newsletter. We’ll also have an assembly page compiling all our stories.
In creating your story, be creative and be open to the Holy Spirit. Have fun! You can visit our video resource page at http://gcsynod.org/video for tips on filming, and feel free to contact Brian Flatgard, our communications director, at bflatgard@gcsynod.org for any kind of assistance.
Our theme this year’s events is “Be Bold in Your Baptism,” and our guiding Bible verse is Galatians 3:27: “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Bonus points if you can incorporate that into your story. 😊
Please share your story by May 1, 2023. (Earlier is better as we take the time to develop this important resource.)
Thank you for all you do in our synod, and we look forward to hearing and sharing your story.

Mid-way through our third year guiding congregations through times of transition, we continue to rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us. We seek to Be Bold and innovative as the number of openings for rostered leaders increase and the number of candidates to fill those openings decrease. We invite you to pray with us for new leaders for God’s church.
