This May, our Lutheran advocacy efforts have spanned from international platforms at the United Nations to impactful local state policies, reflecting our commitment as a church to engage energetically in our faith and life. Here’s a comprehensive update on our recent activities:
International Advocacy at the U.N.
The ECOSOC Youth Forum, held from April 16-18, saw Lutheran participation aimed at reinforcing the 2030 Agenda. With a focus on sustainable development goals including poverty eradication and climate action, seven delegates from our global Lutheran community actively contributed to discussions on creating resilient solutions to today’s crises.
Statewide Successes in Advocacy
In California, the Lutheran Office of Public Policy (LOPPCA) celebrated its fifth successful Lutheran Lobby Day. Advocates from across the state converged in Sacramento to promote legislative measures tackling housing, environmental responsibility, and public health. Notable bills discussed included AB 2728 for housing accountability and SB 1497, aimed at making polluters accountable for climate-related damages.
In Colorado, the conclusion of the legislative session saw Lutheran Advocacy Ministry (LAM-CO) successfully influence several bills to promote social justice, healthcare reform, and economic equity. The Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly marked its 40th anniversary with celebrations of long-standing advocacy efforts.
Engagement and Empowerment in Other States
Ohio’s Hunger Network hosted a significant gathering on housing affordability, demonstrating the power of faith-led advocacy in policy discussions. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, more than 200 advocates rallied to support initiatives combating hunger and climate change, with pivotal contributions from ELCA leaders.
