Lifting Voices for Justice: ELCA Advocacy on Child Hunger, DACA, and More

The ELCA Advocacy office in Washington, D.C., has provided its latest updates on pressing issues that call for faithful action, ranging from addressing child hunger to advocating for climate justice at the global level. These initiatives reflect our Lutheran calling to proclaim God’s peace and act boldly in service to our neighbors and the world.

Child Hunger

Despite modest increases in after-school meal participation, millions of eligible children still lack access to vital nutrition programs. The ELCA supports efforts to expand awareness and participation in programs like the School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs, as highlighted by the Food Research & Action Center’s (FRAC) latest report. We continue to advocate for policies ensuring all children receive the nutrition they need to thrive.

COP29 Climate Advocacy

This year’s UN Climate Change Conference, held Nov. 11-22 in Baku, Azerbaijan, showcases strong ELCA leadership, including young adults working to inspire global climate action. Through prayer, music, and advocacy, we amplify the call to care for God’s creation. This work builds on our year-round climate advocacy and aligns with the Lutheran World Federation’s theme for COP29: “Creation Not For Sale.”

Peacemaking in the Middle East

As U.S.-Israel relations face critical moments, the ELCA continues to advocate for humanitarian aid access in Gaza, reflecting our social statement For Peace in God’s World. Our commitment to peacemaking includes supporting calls for a ceasefire and ensuring that aid reaches those most in need.

Defending DACA

With the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program facing renewed legal challenges, nearly 600,000 young people, alongside their families, are at risk of losing crucial protections. The ELCA remains steadfast in advocating for Dreamers, reinforcing our long-standing commitment to welcoming the stranger as Christ commands.

As we navigate this time of transition and uncertainty, let us remember our Lutheran calling to serve our neighbors, care for creation, and work for justice. Stay informed and join our advocacy efforts to make a difference. Visit ELCA Advocacy for more resources and updates.
