Spring 2024 ION Newsletter: Transforming Lives and Building Connections

The Inside Out Network (ION) continues to make significant strides in supporting returning citizens and fostering community connections. Our Spring 2024 Newsletter highlights several key initiatives, stories of perseverance, and updates on our ongoing projects. For more details and to stay updated on our progress, read the full newsletter as PDF here or online here.

Six Words to Guide Us

Fred Nelson, ION’s executive director, shares his personal reflection on six guiding words: “Remember those,” “Be patient,” and “Feel contentment.” These words, inspired by Hebrews 13:3, remind us to empathize deeply with those in prison and to cultivate patience and gratitude in our work. This perspective is essential as we navigate the complexities of our mission.

Indispensable ION Interns

Since the summer of 2020, ION has welcomed around 55 interns from various universities, including Arizona State, Portland State, and the University of Arizona. These interns play a crucial role in our operations, connecting with service providers, assisting returning citizens, and forming relationships with corrections staff. We are proud of their contributions and look forward to continuing this successful program.

Reentry Congregation Initiative

Our Reentry Congregation Initiative, aimed at empowering congregations to engage in reentry ministry, is back on track. Despite some delays due to funding and expansion challenges, we are excited to announce that the writing of our “Effective Reentry Ministry for Ordinary Congregations” guide has begun. This practical how-to guide will help congregations support returning citizens effectively.

Tablet Update

Our efforts to deploy the ION platform on inmate tablets have made significant progress. Although the process involves navigating various legal and technical challenges, we are optimistic about the upcoming implementation. We appreciate the patience and support from our community as we work towards this transformative goal.

Support and Contributions

We are immensely grateful for the generous support received through the “Color Me Yellow” campaign, which raised $60,000. This funding will help us expand our reach to Mississippi and integrate our platform onto inmate tablets. Every contribution makes a difference in connecting returning citizens with essential services and support.
