What Does It Mean to Be a Deacon? Join the April 10 Fireside Chat

The Seminaries of the ELCA invite you to a virtual Fireside Chat on Thursday, April 10, 2025, for a conversation exploring Word and Service Ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

This hour-long online gathering will feature Deacon Krista Anderson, ELCA Region 3 CaLM Program Director for the Support of Ministers of Word and Service, and Deacon Beth Anderson, a Coach and Spiritual Director at Centered Growth. Together, they will share insights and experiences from the ministry of deacons in the ELCA—leaders who are called to connect the gathered church with the needs of the world.

This event is ideal for anyone discerning a call to diaconal ministry, walking with others in the discernment process, or seeking a deeper understanding of the ELCA’s two rostered ministries: Word and Sacrament and Word and Service.

In the Lutheran tradition, ministry is not reserved for one kind of leadership. Deacons embody a theology of accompaniment—walking with communities, standing in the gap between church and world, and lifting up service as proclamation. This conversation will offer clarity and inspiration for those curious about this vital expression of ministry in today’s church.

Come with your questions and curiosity, and leave with a broader vision of how the Spirit is calling leaders to serve.
