“Teaching Certainty”: Dr. Marcela K. Perett Offers Fresh Insight on Luther’s Catechesis
Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) invites the wider church to the 2025 Luther Lecture on Wednesday, April 9 at 10 AM (Pacific)—available both on Zoom and in person in Berkeley, California. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Marcela K. Perett of North Dakota State University, who will be in conversation with Dr. Kirsi Stjerna, PLTS Professor of Lutheran History and Theology.
The lecture, titled “Teaching Certainty: A New Look at Martin Luther’s Vernacular Catechesis,” revisits Luther’s early catechetical writings (1522–1529) to explore how his teachings sought to lead believers from despair to assurance in God’s merciful acceptance. Dr. Perett will argue that Luther’s catechism was more than theological instruction—it was a journey designed to help people internalize the same spiritual shift he experienced: from “inconsolable hopelessness” to the joyful certainty of forgiveness.
For congregational leaders, teaching pastors, and Lutheran history enthusiasts across our Grand Canyon Synod, this is a rich opportunity to reflect on how we pass on faith today and how our catechetical practices might continue to speak to the hearts of believers.
