Advent in Harmony: Tucson Choirs Unite for a Festive Celebration

Tucson’s ELCA congregations celebrated the first Sunday in Advent with a joyful combined choir concert at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Over 350 people gathered to enjoy music from eight congregations and hear about Lutheran Campus Ministry’s upcoming mission trip to Guatemala. A freewill offering raised $2,950 to support the mission. Highlights included a stirring combined choir finale of “O Holy Night” and fellowship over cookies.

Janis Richert with the GCS Stewardship Team writes that Lutheran Church of the Foothills in Tucson has: “carried on as servants in ministry during the pandemic,” with weekly recorded gospel readings, pastor sermons, emailed bulletins and retired pastors sharing messages as well. Help serving the homeless at Primavera Men’s Shelter has continued, and since they began utilizing Vanco several years ago, “online giving in this time of worshiping at home is quite easy and greatly appreciated!”

Lenten dialog between southern AZ Catholics and Lutherans

When the 500th anniversary of The Lutheran Reformation took place in 2017, the Vatican and The Lutheran World Federation issued a joint statement and study document, “From Conflict to Communion.” (View online or as PDF.)

A series of Lenten dialogs is our local participation in that endeavor to build ecumenical understanding and cooperation. Three Wednesday morning sessions, from 10:30 am to noon, will take place in March, with Bishop Hutterer and Bishop Weisenburger attending some of the dialogs.
