Region 2 Spotlight: Rocky Mountain Synod

The Grand Canyon Synod is delighted to shine this week’s Synod Spotlight on the Rocky Mountain Synod (RMS), a vibrant and diverse community that spans five states—Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and Western Texas. Led by The Rev. Meghan Johnston Aelabouni, who began her role as the fourth Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod on August 1, 2024, the RMS is home to 153 congregations, 9 campus ministries, 3 outdoor ministries, 2 public policy/advocacy offices, and 7 social ministry organizations.

The Rocky Mountain Synod is an essential partner within Region 2 of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), collaborating closely with our own Grand Canyon Synod. Our shared Interim Director for Congregation Transition, Deacon Katie Kline, is a testament to the strong relationship between our synods, as we work together to support the ministry needs of our congregations and communities.

Bishop Aelabouni’s leadership brings new energy and vision to the Rocky Mountain Synod as they continue to navigate the opportunities and challenges of ministry in the diverse contexts of the American West. With a commitment to justice, advocacy, and vibrant worship, the RMS exemplifies what it means to be church together in this region.

As we celebrate the ongoing partnership with the Rocky Mountain Synod, we invite our Grand Canyon Synod community to pray for Bishop Aelabouni, the RMS staff, and all who are part of this dynamic synod. May our shared ministry continue to bear fruit as we work together in service of the Gospel.
