Faith-Based Civic Engagement: Join NCC Freedom Summer 2024
This summer, the National Council of Churches (NCC) invites you to participate in a transformative campaign inspired by the historic 1964 Freedom Summer. Much like its predecessor, NCC Freedom Summer 2024 aims to educate, engage, and empower voters across the United States, focusing on five priority states: Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan.
The campaign kicks off during NCC’s Impact Week, starting the week of Juneteenth, and will culminate with a Freedom Summit on August 17, 2024. The initiative includes a variety of engagement opportunities, from voter registration drives to educational programs like the Virtual Freedom Summer Academy. This six-week intensive “Sunday school” will equip participants with a deep understanding of civic engagement and social justice from a faith-based perspective, concluding with a certificate of completion.
The heart of NCC Freedom Summer lies in its ground-level mobilization efforts, featuring the NCC Freedom Ride—a five-city tour combining faith, food, and fellowship to inspire and empower communities. The schedule for the Freedom Ride is as follows:
July 19, 2024 – Jacksonville, Florida
July 26, 2024 – Atlanta, Georgia
August 2, 2024 – Durham, North Carolina
August 9, 2024 – Detroit, Michigan
August 16, 2024 – Jackson, Mississippi
We call on all congregations within the Grand Canyon Synod to engage with this pivotal campaign. You can support by hosting an event, nominating a Freedom Fellow, providing accommodations for volunteers, or connecting your community to various volunteer opportunities. Your involvement can make a tangible difference in our collective pursuit of justice and empowerment.
