ELCA Spotlight: The Impact of Lutheran Services in America
This week in our Synod Spotlight, we are honored to highlight Lutheran Services in America, a national leader in faith-based health and human services. With a network that spans 300 organizations across 1,400 communities, Lutheran Services in America reaches one in 50 Americans each year, providing essential care and support to over 6 million people. View their fact sheets for Arizona and Nevada.
Lutheran Services in America exemplifies our Lutheran commitment to serving our neighbors, particularly those in vulnerable situations. From coast to coast, they address a wide range of needs, including senior care, disability services, housing support, disaster response, and much more. This network is a powerful force for good, driven by the values of compassion, justice, and equity.
In Arizona, Lutheran Services in America has been a cornerstone of community support since 1923, with five member organizations working across 20 locations to serve over 54,000 people annually. These organizations, such as the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society and Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, provide critical services that enhance the quality of life for countless individuals.
Similarly, in Nevada, Lutheran Services in America has been making a profound difference since 1985. Through the efforts of Lutheran Social Services of Nevada and Orphan Grain Train, the network empowers over 10,000 people each year in communities like Las Vegas and Sparks.
But the impact of Lutheran Services in America extends far beyond any one state. Nationally, their work is a testament to the power of collective action and faith-driven service. By mobilizing resources and expertise from across the country, they are able to address complex challenges and create lasting change in the lives of millions.
As members of the Grand Canyon Synod, we are proud to be part of this extraordinary network that lives out our faith in service to others. Lutheran Services in America is more than just a collection of organizations; it is a movement—one that brings hope, healing, and opportunity to people across the United States.
