Together, let’s continue to ask, “What, then, should we do?” to promote justice and peace worldwide.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of ELCA World Hunger, an initiative dedicated to addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty globally. As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on our achievements and the ongoing challenges in creating a just world where everyone can thrive.
From July 16 to 20, we invite you to the 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans, where the theme “Created to Be” will come alive. Attendees will engage in role-playing games in the Interactive Learning Space, exploring real-world scenarios of poverty and learning how to advocate for justice at the intersections of migration, environment, race, gender, and economics.
In addition to our youth-focused initiatives, we continue to support domestic programs such as the Daily Bread Grants and the Domestic Hunger Grants. This year, we are emphasizing efforts in states like Alabama and South Dakota to provide essential services during critical times such as summer and after school. The deadline for grant applications is June 16, so we urge interested parties to apply soon.
We also celebrate the impactful work of individuals like ELCA Deaconess Cora Rose, who has championed legal aid in rural communities and fought for the rights of the hungry. Her work, in collaboration with St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, exemplifies our commitment to both immediate aid and systemic change.
As we honor the past 50 years, we also look to the future with resources designed to inspire and mobilize. Available now for download are an action guide, a commemorative video, a poster, and PowerPoint templates which you can find at ELCA.org/WH50.
This is a call to action for all our members and partners. Engage with us, learn from our stories, and contribute to our mission. Let us continue to ask ourselves and our communities, “What, then, should we do?” as we strive for peace and justice in God’s world.
