ELCA Advocates Push for Just 2024 Farm Bill as Time Runs Short

As the 2024 Farm Bill continues to be debated in Congress, the ELCA is urging Lutherans to raise their voices for a more just and sustainable future. The Farm Bill, one of the most significant pieces of legislation impacting U.S. agriculture, rural communities, and global hunger, is running out of time as Congress faces a tight legislative calendar.

The ELCA’s advocacy team has been meeting with congressional staff on both sides of the aisle to stress the importance of a Farm Bill that supports both hunger programs and farming communities. Without this essential legislation, programs like SNAP and climate-smart agriculture could face severe cuts. If Congress doesn’t act soon, there’s a risk of the bill being delayed until late 2025, putting vital programs in jeopardy.

Lutherans are encouraged to take action by contacting their lawmakers and urging them to pass a Farm Bill that aligns with our values of caring for the hungry and stewarding creation. The week of September 9 marks a crucial period as members of Congress return to Capitol Hill for three weeks of legislative work before the November elections.
