Defending Our Call: Global Refuge Responds to Attacks on Humanitarian Work

As people of faith, we are called to welcome the stranger, to walk alongside the vulnerable, and to speak truth in the face of misinformation. Global Refuge, a Lutheran-rooted humanitarian organization, has faithfully provided support to legally admitted refugees and immigrants for over 85 years. This commitment includes assisting Afghan Allies who risked their lives to protect U.S. troops, persecuted Christians, and unaccompanied children seeking safety.

Unfortunately, false accusations have been leveled against this vital work. In response, Global Refuge unequivocally condemns these claims and reaffirms its mission: to serve the most vulnerable, safeguard children from human trafficking, and reunite them with their families. Their work has remained steadfast under both Democratic and Republican administrations, always in partnership with the U.S. government and in full compliance with rigorous vetting processes.

Rooted in the Gospel and Lutheran values, this ministry is not just a political issue—it is a biblical mandate. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Our faith compels us to act with love and justice, resisting narratives that seek to divide rather than heal.

As a synod, we stand in solidarity with Global Refuge and all organizations working to uphold the dignity of refugees and immigrants. We invite our congregations to join in this mission—whether through advocacy, prayer, or direct support.
