Southern Arizona ELCA pastors book study

Retired pastors Ron Rude and John Kautz are hosting southern Arizona ELCA pastors in a discussion on books which uncover important racial accord challenges and implications for Christ’s ministry. 

The main book is  “Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S” (Fortress Press, 2019).  The writer is Lenny Duncan, recently ordained ELCA pastor serving Jehu’s Table congregation in Brooklyn.

Along with Duncan's "Dear Church" book - which is a black persons's challenging words for white people, you are also invited to read "White Fragility: What it's so Hard for White People to Talk About Racism" - which is a white person's challenging words for white people. We should have some interesting discussion weaving both these books. Hope to see many of you.

Schedule:

  • Jan. 14 – Intro, Chapters 1 & 2

  • Jan. 21 – Chapters 3, 4, 5

  • Jan. 28 – Chapters 6, 7, 8

  • Feb. 4 – Chapters 9, 10, 11

The coffee pot will be on. So that we venture beyond a mere 101 level, we’d ask that you make the commitment to carefully read the book, be prepared, and be present (barring real emergencies) at all 4 discussions. Please RSVP by email or text.
