Bishop Hutterer: Remembering Dr. King

This week, we honor The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King preached a message of love. A message of unity where all of God's people could walk together. Where people of faith stood as a beacon of light to those struggling against injustice.

In my travels throughout the Grand Canyon Synod, I am grateful to see the myriad ways in which our congregations and people shine. For every formal ministry of a congregation, there are a hundred informal works by individuals.

There is the food pantry stocked by congregations, and there is the meal delivered to the grieving family. We sing the hymns of the church year, and we sing birthday songs to the young and the old. We donate money and items to our ministries, and we lend a hand of support to new and old neighbors. We support the advocacy of the ELCA, and we pray as individuals for the justice most resonating to us.

Thank you for the work that you do everyday in your community to be a light to your family, friends, and neighbors. We know, and Dr. King knew, that taking action and raising your voice is not always easy.

Radiant God, shine on us and in us.
