“We Survived the End of the World”: A Book Club on Apocalypse and Hope

Lessons of Survival: A Spirited Discussion on “We Survived the End of the World”

In a time marked by pandemics, environmental collapse, and political upheaval, fear of the future often overshadows hope. Yet Steven Charleston’s We Survived the End of the World: Lessons from Native America on Apocalypse and Hope offers a powerful reminder that survival—and even renewal—is possible.

This February, the Spirited Book Club invites you to explore this profound work, where Charleston, a Choctaw elder and retired Episcopal bishop, shares how Indigenous communities have withstood centuries of devastation. From the teachings of Native prophets like Ganiodaiio, Tenskwatawa, Smohalla, and Wovoka to the sacred stories of the Hopi people, Charleston reveals strategies for enduring apocalyptic times with courage and dignity.

Join us Thursdays, February 6 and 20, from 3:00–4:00 PM AZ (MST) via Zoom, for guided discussions facilitated by Sheri Brown.

  • February 6: Chapters 1–4 (Apocalypse, Ganiodaiio, Tenskwatawa, Smohalla)

  • February 20: Chapters 5–7 (Wovoka, The Hopi, Prophets, Epilogue)

Charleston’s work resonates deeply with our Lutheran values of hope and resilience in community. His reflections challenge us to confront apocalyptic fears not in isolation but through relationships—with God, one another, and creation.
