This year's Scherer Lecture from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) will focus on three Christians in our own day who brought creative innovation to the practice of mission.

The first, Lesslie Newbigin, discovered the West was in need of conversion, and so advocated a "missionary encounter with Western culture."

The second, Lamin Sanneh, discovered in those evangelized the "infinite translatability of the gospel."

The third, Dorothy Day, challenged Christians with her life of hospitality among the poor and her strong belief in pacifism.

All three are models of mission today. This lecture is funded through The Eleanor and Arnold Scherer Endowment Fund at LSTC.

Dr. Hunsberger is professor emeritus of missiology at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. He was the founding coordinator of the Gospel andOur Culture Network in North America and has served as the Secretary, Treasurer andPresident of the American Society of Missiology. He currently serves as an associate editor of the International Bulletin of Mission Research. Hunsbergeris a Minister in the Presbyterian Church.
