I’ve always wanted to be a pastor. When I was 15 years old and visited a classmate’s church, I saw with my own eyes that a grown-up girl could be a pastor. The church had me at “hello.”

My parents, on the other hand, were not so inclined. I remember my father telling me, “The best way to help poor people is to not become one of them. Be an attorney. Make some money.”

Today is the commemoration of Archbishop Oscar Romero, a Salvadoran priest who was assassinated while standing behind the altar as he prepared to preside at mass. He is known as a martyr and prophet, using his voice to speak out against the human rights violations of the people of El Salvador. As we look at Bp. Romero’s life, it is easy to see that indeed the Spirit dwelt within him, and even with the daily threat of death and violence he continued to speak boldly to the powers that oppressed the Salvadorans.

Scholarships available for first-time attendees to Women of the ELCA's Triennial Gathering

The Heidi Gerrish Triennial Gathering Memorial Scholarship is is provided by the Grand Canyon Women to encourage first-time attendance at our Women of the ELCA’s national Triennial Gathering, held every three years. View the scholarship application as PDF or as a Word document.

In 2023, our Triennial Gathering will be in Phoenix from September 21-24, 2023. This scholarship includes a pre-paid registration to the event and $250 is to be used for expenses related to attending.
