Navigating Bias and Systemic Power: A Deep Dive with Janelle Scales

Join us for an enlightening online session with anti-bias consultant Janelle Scales on Wednesday, May 8, at 11 am via Zoom. This workshop is essential for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of intersectionality and the pervasive effects of ableism in our communities. Janelle will guide us through a discussion on the ways bias, both implicit and explicit, alters our interactions and the systemic power dynamics that influence our societal structures. The session will particularly focus on how ableism affects community care and why making accommodations for disabled individuals is crucial for collective liberation and safety.

If you missed Janelle’s impactful session on April 10, which covered children, power dynamics, and radical compassion, we encourage you to catch up here. Janelle Scales is renowned for her work across various sectors, educating on critical social justice issues such as racism, sexism, transphobia, and ableism. Her work inspires profound self-reflection and motivates collective action.

To answer some commonly asked questions about these regular gatherings:

"Why are you still meeting?" "Don't become too familiar with loneliness. Community is a risk, but liberation depends on the collective. Who can you trust to hold you?" -- Cole Arthur Riley, author of Black Liturgies

"How can I prepare?" Courageous leaders pay attention and listen actively. We invite you to bring a spirit of curiosity and openness to these gatherings and to all aspects of your life. What are you noticing? Where is Spirit moving? How are you being invited to participate in the work God is already doing, especially outside the walls of the building where the church often gathers?

"What if I'm not a group person?" Courageous leaders take calculated risks. We invite you to take a small step outside your comfort zone and allow yourself to be seen and witnessed. We can almost guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised by the loving, caring, and nurturing nature of community in this time together.
