Compensation based on education/experience; negotiable – PT (15 hrs/wk); 2 wks paid vacation

New Promise Lutheran:

This is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) with an average Sunday attendance of 225 people. There are 2 services (Sept – May) and 1 in the summer months. The choir has had upwards of 20 people and post-pandemic, that could change. New Promise is an eclectic group of people from all faith backgrounds which allows for worship music to be varied in style. 

Position Description:

  • The Music Director will have general oversight of the music programs of the church.

  • Serve as Director of the Adult Choir

  • Lead the Praise team 

  • Recruit, train, encourage and support the instrumental and choral musicians of the church  

  • Creatively consider ways of growing music programs in depth and variety.

  • Arrange for a substitute when needed.

  • Attend weekly staff meeting

  • Participate in monthly Worship Team meetings

  • Schedule and direct regular rehearsals of musical groups

  • Maintain the music library

  • Work with pastoral staff to see that worship music is appropriate to liturgical season, Sunday themes and traditions of the church.

  • Prepare Worship bulletin information for staff and provide timely information on music and worship to the congregation through the monthly newsletter.

  • Stay attentive to worship and music educational opportunities, workshops and clinics to remain current with practices and trends in worship music. 

  • Be available for special services of the congregation (Christmas Eve, Easter, Lent)

  • Responsible for hiring of special musicians for special events/services

Education, skills and abilities:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s of Music or comparable degree with training in choral directing.

  • Knowledge of the Lutheran church, liturgical calendar and ability to lead a variety of multi ethnic and contemporary styles of music.

  • Experience leading congregational singing 

  • Flexibility and adaptability

  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work with volunteers

Support

  • Accountable to the congregation with direct interaction specifically with the Senior Pastor.

  • The Congregational Council, Mutual Ministry team and the church staff serve as support to the Music Director.
