The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), enacted in August 2022, marks the most significant climate and clean energy investment in U.S. history. For ELCA congregations, this landmark legislation presents a transformative opportunity to lead the charge in creation care while saving money and improving resilience.

At its core, the IRA aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 44% by 2030. Among its many provisions are Clean Energy Tax Credits and, crucially for nonprofits and ministries, a Direct Pay rebate program. This program offers a 30% rebate on clean energy equipment costs, paid once the equipment is installed and operational. By adopting solar energy or making energy-efficient upgrades, your ministry not only contributes to a healthier planet but also reaps long-term energy savings.

The Mission Investment Fund (MIF), a financial ministry of the ELCA, is here to help congregations seize this opportunity. Partnering with MIF or the ELCA Federal Credit Union provides up-front financing to bring clean energy projects to life. Congregations like St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill, CA, have already experienced the benefits: their 24 solar panels cut energy costs, enabling them to fund additional ministry projects like building a courtyard garden.

Taking this step reflects our shared Lutheran values of stewardship, care for creation, and service to our neighbors. By leveraging federal incentives, your congregation can model faithful leadership in the transition to a sustainable future.
