Walking in Grace: October Reflections from Spirit in the Desert

Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center celebrated a meaningful and active October, welcoming groups from across the Grand Canyon Synod and beyond. This month’s highlights included the Grand Canyon Synod Fall Gathering, a reflective retreat led by Bishop Deborah Hutterer. From October 21-23, participants explored the theme “Embody the Word,” engaging in worship, fellowship, and discussions with esteemed speakers Rev. Andrea Roske-Metcalfe and Elder Perci Ami. This gathering allowed rostered leaders and lay members to connect deeply with their faith and one another, strengthening our synod community.

October also saw Spirit in the Desert host the Men’s Silent Retreat organized by Miles Christi, the Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch’s fall conference, and the return of the beloved Women of Luther College. Each group brought unique energy, renewing our center’s purpose as a sanctuary for faith-based growth and connection.

The month was marked by gratitude for our partners, especially the Carefree Kiwanis Club, whose ongoing support enables Spirit in the Desert to host impactful programs like the Healing of Memories workshops for veterans. Kiwanis leaders, including Executive Director Sandra Carrier and President Cam Kuniej, embody a spirit of service that strengthens the entire Carefree community.

We’re looking ahead to more opportunities for renewal, including the upcoming “Living Into a New Story” retreat in January, where science and theology intersect for fresh spiritual insights, and “From the Inside Out” retreat for holistic well-being. For those seeking weekly moments of quiet reflection, our “Spirited Centering Prayer” on Mondays offers guided time to reconnect with God’s presence.

Thank you to all who walked with us this October. We invite everyone to explore upcoming retreats, deepen connections, and continue supporting Spirit in the Desert’s mission. Visit our website for more information: Spirit in the Desert.
