In this post, we share a letter (English, Spanish) from Bishop Hutterer and Synod Vice President Barbara Carl, thanking you and our synod’s congregations for continued mission support, half of which is passed to ELCA churchwide for ministry in the larger church.

Dear Partner in Ministry,

2022 was a year where, after an almost 2-year pandemic hibernation, face-to-face life and activity started to resume.

In your name, and through our partnership as In  and synod, together we were able to:

• Accompany three congregations as they discerned potential Anchor church possibilities.

• Explore 2 new ministry possibilities: the West Valley Young Adult Ministry, and a partnership with the UCC for Nogales Latino Ministry.

• Provide $202,874 in project and ACTS grants to 32 ministries and congregations for outreach and ministry in their communities.

• Welcome 5 new candidates into candidacy and continue to accompany 27 candidates for Word and Sacrament and Word and Service.

• Continue support to Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission and House of Prayer for basic human needs and spiritual formation of the Wisdom Keepers.

For every dollar that comes to the Grand Canyon Synod in mission support…

• 50 cents is passed to churchwide for ministry in the larger church where your gifts are added to the other 9100 congregations across the ELCA. You see this most clearly though the call of Pastor Miguel Gomez-Acosta as Director of Evangelical Mission, the Young Adults in Global Mission program, the National Youth Gathering, Lutheran World Federation, and so much more.

• 22 cents is shared with our local missions and ministries like Native American Urban Ministry, Lutheran Campus Ministry, Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest and Nevada, California Lutheran University, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, the Lutheran Church of Senegal, the Mexican Lutheran Church, and over $200,000 in grants to synod congregations.

• 28 cents supports Office of the Bishop staff, administration, travel, and programs like the Synod Council and Conference Dean Retreat.
