Spotlight: Region 2

Region 2 of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) plays a pivotal role in uniting the work of congregations across a vast and diverse territory, encompassing New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, most of Wyoming, parts of Texas, and all of Hawaii. Within this region, five synods—Grand Canyon, Sierra Pacific, Southwest California, Pacifica, and Rocky Mountain—collaborate to support over 600 congregations and many more ministries and organizations.

The ELCA is divided into nine regions, each serving as a vital link between the churchwide organization and local synods. These regions ensure that the unique needs of each synod are met, providing support and resources tailored to the diverse contexts in which they operate. Region 2, in particular, is known for its geographical diversity, from the deserts of Arizona to the mountains of Colorado and the islands of Hawaii.

Within this structure, synods serve as regional support, guiding congregations in their ministries and assisting in the ordination and placement of pastoral leaders. The collaboration within Region 2 strengthens the broader mission of the ELCA, ensuring that the gospel is proclaimed and lived out in varied cultural and environmental landscapes.

As part of our Synod Spotlight series, we celebrate Region 2’s ongoing work in fostering connections, supporting congregational life, and embodying our Lutheran commitment to faith and service. Whether through synod assemblies, regional meetings, or local initiatives, Region 2 is a crucial point of connection in the ELCA’s mission, helping to weave the fabric of our shared life together.
