Scam Bishop Hutterer emails are to be ignored

Once again, impersonators are pretending to be Bishop Hutterer, using a fake Gmail address. Please ignore these emails. The Bishop will never ask for money or gift cards via email.

Read below for more details on the fake email, how to report abuse to Google, and how to recognize scams online.

This mornings emails were from dhutterer.gcsynod @ gmail.com, which is an email address set up by an impostor. We reported the abuse of a Gmail account, and encourage you to do the same whenever you receive a malicious email from a Gmail account. Do so here: support.google.com/mail/contact/abuse

The subject line was all caps, with the person’s first name and “MANY BLESSINGS.”

The message reads: “Do you have a moment I have a request I need you to handle discreetly. I am in a meeting no calls so just reply my email.”

Note that scammers use publicly available email addresses when they target victims.

Avoid being duped with this info from the FCC: How to recognize and avoid phishing scams.

If you receive any requests of this nature or are ever uncertain as to the legitimacy of any communication that appears to come from the Bishop, please contact the Synod office as soon as possible.

Thank you for your vigilance and your help!
