Promoting Unity: Highlights from the National Workshop on Christian Unity

Ecumenical and Interfaith Representatives of the Grand Canyon Synod, Pastors Jonathan Linman and Mari Larson, attended the National Workshop on Christian Unity held at the ELCA Churchwide offices in Chicago November 18-21. This gathering brought together leaders from several traditions committed to fostering unity among Christian denominations and addressing challenges in today’s divided world.

Pastor Mari Larson, from St. Andrew Lutheran in Las Vegas, was celebrated for her dedicated leadership as President of the Lutheran Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Network (LEIRN) during a challenging tenure, including the pandemic. Her work exemplifies the Grand Canyon Synod’s commitment to collaboration and ecumenical progress.

Pastor Jonathan Linman shared an innovative model for ecumenical reception developed for the Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue event held in Phoenix in January of this year. This model is now available for other synods to adapt, furthering ecumenicalengagement nationwide.

Participants discussed pressing topics such as Christian Nationalism, its impact on communities, and potential responses under the incoming administration in Washington. Quarterly Zoom consultations were proposed to strategize collectively. Concerns about mass deportations among immigrant populations also took center stage. Pastor Linman met with Father Miguel, Ecumenical Officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, to explore the possibility of local Lutheran-Catholic dialogues and joint actions to support vulnerable communities.

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton distributed the latest report of Round 12 of the Lutheran-Catholic dialogue, a critical resource for deepening understanding and collaboration. Additionally, Pastor Gabi Aelabouni provided an update on the escalating conflicts in the Holy Land, emphasizing the need for continued prayer and action.

The event concluded with a stirring call to action from Bishop Vashti McKenzie of the National Council of Churches, reminding all attendees of the urgent need for healing and unity in divided times.

The workshop underscored the importance of ecumenical partnerships, equipping leaders to respond to societal challenges while fostering visible Christian unity. For those inspired to act locally, feel free to reach out to Pastors Larson or Linman with your ideas for local ecumenism. And watch for coming announcements about the annual observances of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January of 2025. Please plan to attend.
