POSITION FILLED: Outreach and Communications Assistant for Temple Beth Shalom

Temple Beth Shalom, a Reform Jewish congregation in the northwest valley with approximately 200 members is looking to fill a new part time positon.  We have a very diverse membership population that ranges from young adults with or without children to a large population of older and elderly members, whose needs are quite different from our young members.  For many of our members, Judaism is their religion by choice.  Many of our members are part of an interfaith family, and/ or are same sex partners/spouses.  We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive community that encourages worship, education, and social activities

The position of Outreach and Communications Assistant is one that requires the incumbent to get to know and informally communicate regularly with our members, in order to effectively work closely with the Rabbi on Outreach and other member efforts.  Also works with the Program Director and Synagogue Administrator in implementing communication strategies which support programs identified by temple committees, and editing and producing weekly and monthly publications designed for communications with the temple membership.

Being Jewish is not a requirement for this position, but the incumbent will need to have an interest in acquiring some knowledge about Judaism, and occasionally attend temple services, events, activities or programs so they understand and can speak with knowledge and enthusiasm about “who we are and what we do”.  This is a 16-20 hour/week position.  The work week will be 4-5 hours daily (includes a short lunch break), Tuesday through Friday.  The incumbent is eligible for paid vacation and a generous number of paid holidays, as defined by TBS policy.

Applicants will have a minimum of 5-7 years working in planning, communication, and administration, including at least 3 years working with senior staff members in a religious congregational setting. Some knowledge of the Jewish faith is a plus, but is not necessary, if willing to learn. Knowledge of and experience using office computer applications and some form of desktop publishing is required.  Previous experience writing press releases and articles for newspapers is preferred.
