Lutheran Disaster Response: Japan Typhoon

On October 12th, Super Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in Japan leading 181 rivers to crest and causing widespread flooding and landslides across the impacted area. About 80 people have been reported dead, with nearly 10 still missing and thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. The storm has devastated areas that were already weakened by previous disasters, including last month’s Typhoon Faxai.

Lutheran Disaster Response, through local partner, CWS Japan, is responding to this disaster, prioritizing the most vulnerable communities. Response activities include:

  • Restoration of homes and livelihoods

  • Coordination of volunteers for debris removal

  • Capturing of lessons learned from Typhoon Hagibis for future risk reduction efforts
