In Memoriam: Rev. Arne Markland

We pray for the family and friends of retired pastor Arne Kaleb Markland, who passed away on May 4, 2022 in Tempe, Arizona. Services were held May 9, 2022.

Arne was born December 4, 1925 to Sjur Andreas Markland and Klara Markland in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated High School from Hillcrest Lutheran academy in Fergus Falls, MN.  After he attended Kings College in Delaware. Joined US Navy and served in WW II in the Pacific.

After the US Navy, he attended Columbia University in NY. He went to Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, majoring in History and endorsement in Music. He attended the Lutheran Bretheran Seminary in Fergus Falls, MN, graduating in 1952. He attended Northwestern Seminary in Minneapolis, MN. He then joined the US Air Force as a Chaplain.

He started a Lutheran church in Athens, GA. He then attended New York University, graduating with a Masters in Student Personnel. He then went to Brookings, SD, State University as Campus Pastor. Later he went to University of Utah in Salt Lake City as campus Pastor and at the same time he studied and received his Ph. D. in cultural foundations of Education. He later was pastor of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Salt Lake City Utah.

He and Jean traveled and sailed on many cruises around the world for 30 years and 230 cruises, visiting 70 plus countries in their travels together.  They moved to Scottsdale, AZ, in 2000, later moving to Tempe, AZ.  He and Jean were married December 20, 1952 and enjoyed a life together of 69 married years.
