Bishop Hazelwood’s message about the shooting in Maine

As Maine is added to the list of places that have experienced a mass shooting, we in the New England Synod raise our voices with the psalmist to cry out, “How long, O Lord? How long?” How much longer will gun violence ravage lives and rip apart communities?

We also lift up prayers for those affected by this tragedy in Lewiston. Those who have lost loved ones, are injured or in pain, as well as those who are tasked with the difficult work of helping to heal: first responders, medical personnel, chaplains, clergy, funeral directors, crime scene investigators, law enforcement officers, trauma counselors and more. We pray for them and all those affected.

Several Maine Council of Churches member denominations are organizing a statewide online prayer vigil for tonight, Thursday, October 26, at 5:30pm. You can find more information at https://mainecouncilofchurches.org

Please join me in praying for all impacted by this incident.

O Loving God, we turn to you in our distress. Our hearts ache for the families of those who have been injured and for lost lives. We pray for all who this act of violence has impacted. May your light shine on those communities that are now filled with fear, sorrow, and anger. May first responders be guided by you as they strive to bring comfort in this moment of terror. Despite all the hatred and fear surrounding us, may your love prevail.

Lord, have mercy. Amen
