2025 Transition Manual Now Available for Congregations

Periods of transition are holy times in the life of a congregation—moments for reflection, renewal, and discernment. To support our congregations in these sacred journeys, the Grand Canyon Synod is proud to introduce the newly revised 2025 Congregations in Transition Manual, now available for download at gcsynod.org/transition.

This comprehensive resource walks congregations through the four key phases of the transition and call process:

  1. Experiencing a Rostered Minister Transition

  2. Intentional Interim and Self-Study

  3. The Call Process

  4. Welcoming a New Rostered Minister

In addition to practical tools and forms, the manual offers spiritual guidance to ensure that congregations approach transitions with prayerful intent. Appendices include templates for interviews, liturgies, newsletters, and more—designed to keep the process centered on discernment and trust in God’s leading.

We are also thrilled to welcome Pastor John Maroni, the new Coordinator of Congregation Transitions for the Grand Canyon Synod, who brings deep pastoral experience and a heart for guiding congregations during these pivotal times. Pastor Maroni is available to answer questions and provide support at mobility@gcsynod.org.

As Lutherans, we understand that calling a pastor or deacon is not just a hiring process—it’s a sacred dialogue with God. During this time of discernment, we place our trust in God’s vision for our ministries, knowing that the Holy Spirit works through every phase to re-create us into the body of Christ the world needs today.

We invite all congregations in transition to access the new manual and explore its rich offerings by visiting our Congregations in Transition page at gcsynod.org/transition. Let’s move boldly into the future, grounded in faith and hope.
